The festive season is a time to unwind, celebrate and indulge — but it can also put extra strain on one of the body’s hardest-working organs: the liver.

While alcohol often takes the spotlight at this time of year, it’s far from the only factor that affects liver health. Diets rich in sugar, processed foods and fats, coupled with reduced physical activity and disrupted sleep patterns, can all contribute to liver stress. Even short-term lifestyle changes during December can influence how well the liver performs its essential functions, from detoxification to energy balance.

LiverScan, an Edinburgh-based preventative health clinic specialising in FibroScan technology, is encouraging people across Scotland to take a more holistic view of liver wellbeing — and to think beyond alcohol when it comes to protection and prevention.

“Most people associate liver disease with drinking, but that’s only part of the picture,” says Claire Hardie, Chief Operating Officer at LiverScan. “We’re increasingly seeing liver damage linked to everyday lifestyle factors — high-sugar diets, sedentary routines and even stress. The good news is that most of it is preventable with awareness and early action.”

FibroScan is a quick, painless and non-invasive test that measures liver stiffness and fat levels — two key early indicators of liver damage. It offers valuable insight long before symptoms appear, giving individuals the chance to make simple lifestyle changes that can protect long-term health.

As part of its seasonal awareness campaign, LiverScan is also highlighting how small, sustainable steps — such as increasing daily movement, moderating portion sizes, reducing sugary snacks, and staying hydrated — can have a lasting impact.

“Your liver is a remarkable organ,” adds Hardie. “It has the ability to repair itself, but only if you give it the chance. This time of year is perfect for checking in, understanding your baseline health, and setting yourself up for a healthier start to the New Year.”

Whether it’s an annual check-up or a festive reset, LiverScan’s message is clear: a healthy liver isn’t just for Christmas — it’s for life.
