LiverScan aims to identify individuals with potential liver disease and fatty livers using the gold standard examination with a FibroScan device. Every day in the UK, more than 40 people die from liver disease and 25% of the adult population are currently estimated to have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Our aim is to be one step ahead and encourage people to take control of their liver health.
The company was formed by a group of friends with medical, health and business angel backgrounds. One of the group came across the FibroScan device following his own MRI examination which was not targeting the liver, but which indicated a potential fatty liver. That diagnosis lead to an examination using the FibroScan device, carried out by a hepatologist. Without that MRI scan identifying an issue, and because most liver disease is asymptomatic, the fatty liver issue would not have been identified, addressed or resolved.
The examination using the FibroScan device, a non-invasive ultrasound procedure, produces 2 results: liver fat (CAP) and liver stiffness (LSM) scores. Fatty liver disease can lead to liver inflammation, scarring and eventually liver cirrhosis or liver cancer. Whilst alcohol can be the cause, in the UK, roughly half of liver disease is classified as NAFLD. It is hugely important that liver disease is caught early, and with simple changes in lifestyle, the damage can often be reversed, partly because of the regenerative nature of the organ itself.
Our group of shareholders all quickly bought into the importance of liver health and the benefits that could result from introducing examinations using the FibroScan device within Scotland on a self-referral basis.
We have also established an advisory board to review our clinical operations, who provide valuable expertise and guidance to optimise our service and ensure patient-centric excellence.
