Liver Scans for Individuals
It is estimated that 25% of the adult population in the UK have NAFLD but not everyone is aware they have it as it is generally a symptomless disease.
If you are unsure and would like to find out if you are at risk you can complete the Love Your Liver health screener created by the British Liver Trust.
Having a FibroScan examination can be beneficial for several reasons:
Liver disease assessment:
A FibroScan examination is commonly used to assess the degree of liver fibrosis. By measuring liver stiffness, it provides valuable information about your liver health and allows you to take control of your future.
Non-invasive alternative to liver biopsy:
A FibroScan examination offers a non-invasive alternative, providing similar information about liver fibrosis without the need for a biopsy.
Monitoring disease progression and treatment efficacy:
A FibroScan examination can be used to monitor the progression of liver fibrosis or your general liver health over time. It allows you to track changes in your liver health and empowers you as an individual to manage your health.
Early detection and intervention:
Liver fibrosis is a progressive condition, and early detection is crucial. A FibroScan examination can help identify liver fibrosis at an early stage before the development of symptoms. Early intervention, such as lifestyle modifications or specific treatments, can potentially slow down or even completely reverse the progression of liver disease.
Personalised patient management:
You can take your FibroScan examination results to your GP or specialist and the results can assist them to tailor an individualised patient management plan and treatment strategies based on your specific liver health status.

FAQs
Do I need a referral?
No, we aim for individuals to be empowered to take control of their own health. Simply click the ‘book now’ button and fill in the information requested.
Is it suitable for me?
A FibroScan is suitable for most people, and everyone has their own reasons, some of these may include:
- An interest in your liver health
- Wishing to maintain a healthy liver
- Having a family history of liver conditions
- Having an unhealthy diet
- Are overweight or obese
- Drink more than 14 units of alcohol per week
- Are concerned about developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease or are affected by these conditions
What do I need to do before the scan?
We suggest wearing clothing which allows easy access to the abdomen. Dresses or jumpsuits may pose difficulties for some.
It is also recommended that you fast for a minimum 3 hours before the FibroScan examination. This can help improve the accuracy and reliability of the results. When you consume a meal, especially a fatty meal, it can lead to increased blood flow to the liver and cause transient changes in liver stiffness. Fasting helps ensure that the liver is in a stable state, reducing potential variations in the measurements.
What will happen during the scan?
You will lie down in a supine position (on your back), with your right arm raised above your head. A gel will be applied to the skin surface of the right upper abdomen. A small, handheld probe will be placed on your skin, and once the correct location is determined, the probe will emit a low frequency vibration. It feels like a small tap on your abdomen, and this will be repeated 10 times. The whole process will take about 15 minutes.
When will I get my results?
Your results will be discussed at the end of your consultation appointment. Plus, you will receive an email within 24 hours with a secure link with an electronic version. We advise you download and share the results with your GP or specialist.
