Why Liver Health Matters During National Cholesterol Education Month

September in the US and October in the UK is National Cholesterol Education Month—a campaign that encourages people to understand and manage their cholesterol levels to reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke.

But what many people don’t realise is that cholesterol and liver health are closely linked.

Liver Health

The liver is responsible for producing and clearing cholesterol from the body. If the liver is damaged—whether through fatty liver disease, alcohol use, or metabolic stress—it becomes less efficient at processing cholesterol. This imbalance can lead to increased LDL (bad cholesterol), reduced HDL (good cholesterol), and a heightened risk of cardiovascular disease.

That’s why we at LiverScan are using this month to highlight the vital role the liver plays in maintaining heart health—and how quick, onsite screening can empower people to make informed choices.

Our workplace FibroScan® service takes just 15 minutes per person and provides immediate results on liver fat and stiffness levels. These readings can offer early warning signs of liver stress, often long before symptoms appear. For employees already managing high cholesterol or other risk factors like obesity, this can be a crucial opportunity to take action.

Claire Hardie, LiverScan’s COO, explains:

“So much of workplace wellness is focused on heart health or mental wellbeing—but the liver is the foundation that supports both. It’s time we connected the dots. Understanding your liver status can give context to cholesterol readings and help shape better health outcomes.”

Employee Health

Whether your business already runs health screening events or is just beginning to explore preventative care, a liver screening session is a powerful addition. It shows employees that you care about their long-term health, not just their performance today.
