Surviving your Summer Holiday!
A few words of advice from our health coach Kirsty:
We all love going on holiday and for months in advance, we look forward to lots of sunshine, interesting food and a new environment. However, a holiday can also bring its’ own challenges and it can be difficult to stay healthy while eating out every day and sampling the local wine. You might start to feel bloated, sluggish or constipated because your body is not used to eating out every day or perhaps you are eating very late at night therefore not sleeping too well. All these things can build up in your body and can then take a few weeks to sort out when you get home.
Your liver keeps your body in equilibrium and it’s the only organ that can regenerate itself. If you can stick to a few basic rules while on holiday you could minimise the post- holiday indulgence blues and keep your liver in optimal health. Here are a few tips:
- Keep moving – much as it’s tempting, try not to sit on the sun lounger all day. Take 20 – 30 minutes of exercise every day.
- Eat a wide variety of fruit and vegetables every day to keep your bowels moving.
- Keep drinking at least 1.5 /2 L of water per day. This will help to flush through the toxins that build up in your body from alcohol thus keeping your liver in check.
- Bring some ginger tea or peppermint tea with you to ease your digestive system.
- Bring some nuts and seeds with you to snack on to avoid energy dips.
- Try not to eat too late at night or if you are eating later, avoid being over full.
Have a happy and healthy holiday!
